5-Citrullus

[FMP-field: image]

The flowers of watermelon (Citrullus vulgaris) are incomplete and imperfect.

Sepals and petals are present, but the carpellate (female) flowers lack an androecium while the staminate (male) flowers lack a gynoecium. The 3 carpels of the carpellate flowers are connate (syncarpous gynoecium) while the anthers of the staminate flowers are connate (which is an unusual feature).

The flowers are actinomorphic, and the ovary of the carpellate flowers is inferior.

Since both staminate and carpellate flowers are found on the same plant, the plants are monoecious.
