Solanaceae

Most members of the Solanaceae are herbaceous plants, either annuals, like this tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) or perennials. There are some members of the family that are shrubs or trees, especially in the tropics. Tomatoes are originally native to the west coast of South America. (So, what did Italians put on their pasta before Christopher Columbus "discovered" the New World?)
