The Solanaceae occurs nearly worldwide; it is especially diverse in Central and South America. Estimates of the number of genera vary from 90 to nearly 150, and there are perhaps 2500 to 3000 species. Modern molecular data supports that the family is monophyletic. Many members of the family contain alkaloids, which can be poisonous or of medicinal value.
