10-Flower buds

The flower buds in magnolias are formed the previous fall and are also covered by a stipule that functions as a bud scale. In the star magnolia, these stipules are very hairy. The yellow arrow points to a stipular bud scale, while the green arrow points to the outer petals of an emerging flower. This is the star magnolia (Magnolia stellata).
