Magnoliaceae

Flowers:
Perfect, large, actinomorphic; numerous spirally arranged parts; no adnation or connation; anthers laminar; gynoecium apocarpous; ovary superior; placentation marginal

Inflorescences:
Flowers solitary, terminal

Fruits:
An aggregate of follicles or samaras; seeds often surrounded by a fleshy aril

Habit:
Trees or less often shrubs; aromatic with ethereal oil cells

Leaves:
Alternate, simple, entire or lobed at tip in Liriodendron; stipules and scars surrounding twigs

  • M. acuminata var. subcordata (yellow cucumbertree)
  • M. fraseri (Fraser magnolia)
  • M. grandiflora (southern magnolia)
  • M. ‘Freeman’ (M. grandiflora × M. virginiana)
  • M. macrophylla (bigleaf magnolia)
  • M. sieboldii (Oyama magnolia)
  • M. stellata (star magnolia)
  • M. tripetala (umbrella magnolia)
  • M. virginiana (sweet bay)
  • M. × soulangeana (saucer magnolia)
  • Liriodendron tulipifera (tulip poplar)
  • L. tuliperifera ‘Aureo-marginata’
  • Michelia figo (banana shrub)

Note: several interesting magnolias are planted in the southeastern corner of Mt. Hope Cemetery (just south and west of the Meat Science Lab and west of FAR) and at the corner of Nevada and Busey in Urbana.
