INBREEDING:

Advantages:

  • Preserves well-adapted genotypes
  • Insures seed set in the absence of pollinators
  • Overcomes sterility
  • Single colonizing individual possible
  • Successful short-term — "complete inbreeding means certain extinction"
Disadvantages:
  • Decreases (or maintains) genetic variability
