Heterostyly — different arrangements of stamens and styles

Distyly — two types of flowers [long styled (pin) and short styled (thrum) flowers].

All flowers on one plant are either pin or thrum. This encourages outcrossing because only pollinations between different floral morphs are successful. There are also genetic and morphological differences (for example, thrum pollen is generally larger).
