This is a view from the top (and at an angle) of the running tank as the agarose gel is loaded with the DNA samples. There is space in this tank for 2 gels, although only one is being run at this time. The space for the second gel is occupied by a block of plastic to take up volume so less buffer can be used.

The instrument being used to load the samples is called a Micropipettor and can pipette very small volumes. In fact, 5-10 µl is all that is typically loaded into each well. In the photo, you can see that all of the wells are being used, and loading of the last well is almost complete.
