UIUC Life Sciences E-mail Accounts

Basic Info
For e-mail accounts on the Life Sciences' servers, your e-mail address is your account name with @life.illinois.edu appended. For example, Jay Doe's account name might be:
jdoe
and so the e-mail address would be:
jdoe@life.illinois.edu

If you have questions about your account, you can reach
Life Sciences' Office of Information Technology at -
email: help@life.illinois.edu
phone: (217) 333-7525

Connecting to your Account
You can use a wide variety of software to read and send mail with your Life Sciences e-mail account. You can access your account via the web at http://webmail.life.illinois.edu/. Common desktop packages are Eudora and Mozilla Thunderbird. We don't recommend using Outlook or Outlook Express on Windows, unless you have installed the appropriate security patches from Microsoft to ensure your system will not be affected by e-mail viruses.

Eudora Pro is available to the U of I community without charge.

E-mail protocols: IMAP, POP and SMTP
If you are reading mail from more then one computer, then configure your e-mail software to use IMAP (Internet Mail Access Protocol). IMAP shows you individual messages from the mail server while storing your mail on the mail server. You can also file mail into multiple mailboxes with IMAP to easily manage your mail. Our webmail server (SquirrelMail) is an IMAP client.

If you are reading mail from one computer, or you would like to read your mail while your computer is disconnected from the Internet, then configure your e-mail software to use POP (Post Office Protocol). POP downloads your mail from the mail server, writes it on your computer, and then typically deletes it from the server.

All e-mail packages use SMTP (Simple Mail Transport Protocol) when you send mail. If your e-mail software asks for an SMTP address, use: smtp.life.illinois.edu

Sending mail using SMTP AUTH & TLS
If your computer is directly connected to the life.illinois.edu network, our mail system will accept your outgoing mail, but if you connect from another network, you should configure your e-mail software to use the SMTP AUTH protocol to provide your login and password when sending messages. Then our server will accept your mail from any network. See our SMTP AUTH page for further details.

Changing Your E-mail Account Password
To change your password, please use our website at
https://www-s.life.illinois.edu/cgi-bin/change-ldap-password
If you've forgotten your password, please stop by our office at 333 or 332 Morrill Hall to have it reset.

Anti-Spam Filters
Our mail system marks messages that it suspects as spam so that the message's subject begins with {Spam?}. You can use filters in your e-mail software to deal with these messages, or e offer server-side filters to set aside spam into a separate mailbox that you can access via our webmail server or e-mail software configured to use the IMAP protocol. To have the server-side filter activated for your account, please send a message to help@life.illinois.edu.

Ph
Ph is the campus electronic directory. People searching for your e-mail address will probably use this service. You should update the e-mail field of your Ph record so that people can find your Life Sciences e-mail address easily.

To update your record you need to know your campus NetID and NetID password.
Use your web browser to open https://ede.cites.uiuc.edu/ and follow the prompts there.

If you don't know your NetID password, please contact us for further information.

Life Sciences E-mail List
When your Life Sciences e-mail account is created, you will be automatically subscribed to receive messages sent to our e-mail list, sols@life.illinois.edu. There will be an automated message in your mailbox when you first log in. This list receives very few messages and is used to keep you informed regarding your e-mail account, computing resources in Life Sciences and other Life Sciences' issues.
