Claytonia virginica, flower in longitudinal section. Note that in the genus Claytonia the ovary is superior; the 3 stigmas indicate that the syncarpous gynoecium is composed of 3 carpels. While you cannot really see it in this photo, there is only one locule in the ovary, and the placentation is basal.
