The genus Lewisia was named after Meriwether Lewis, of the Lewis and Clark expedition, a 3-year expedition that explored the territory from St. Louis, Missouri to the Pacific Ocean, mostly along the Missouri River. There are about 20 species of Lewisia, bitterroot, all native to western North America.
