Is this a shrub or a tree? Good question no easy answer. This is a large plant of Parrotia persica, and it has multiple large trunks. This particular plant was started from a cutting in 1881, and by 1976 was 55 feet tall with a crown 55 feet in diameter. The genus Parrotia has only this one species, and it is native to the Persia and the Caucasus Mountains of Europe. The trunks have beautifully mottled bark, which is difficult to see in this image.
