Fruits

25-Nuts

[FMP-field: image]

Nuts are rather large, dry, indehiscent fruits that come from a syncarpous gynoecium and that contain a single seed.

This example are the acorns of bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa). The ovary wall matures into the hard wall of the acorn. Only one ovule develops into a seed. The "cup" surrounding each acorn is formed from an involucre of small bracts.
