Castanea dentata, American chestnut. This tree is in full flower; the large dark green tree behind the chestnut is a tulip tree. American chestnut, is essentially extinct in the wild in the eastern United States. Chestnut was once a dominant tree in eastern forests, with one in every four trees being a chestnut in some types of forests. However, a fungal disease, chestnut blight, was accidentally introduced into the United States and killed all of the trees. A few isolated trees remain alive in cultivation.
