In the Fagaceae, the female flowers are enclosed by an involucre of bracts. In the genus Quercus, there is only one female flower per involucre. This example is Quercus rubra, red oak. In red oak, it takes two years for mature fruits to develop from the flowers. In the image on the left, there are young flowers with the stigmas protruding through the involucres. The image on the right is of female flowers one year later; the involucres have grown surrounding the acorn that is developing inside.
