My broad interests include invasive species, particularly the success of ants and their impact upon communities. Prior to joining the Suarez lab I explored ant-plant interactions to determine whether induced volatiles are detected and used by foraging fire ants in search of prey.

My future research will include surveying ant diversity in urban and agricultural areas in Champaign and Urbana. These surveys will repeat a study completed in the 1920’s. The diversity of ants in an area can indicate the health of an ecosystem, and replicating the survey can reveal introduced species present and/or changes on the ecosystem when compared to eighty years ago.
