What is an epiphyte tree?

An epiphyte tree is usually an artificially made tree designed to grow epiphytic plants on them. Many botanical gardens have one to show how these plants grow in their natural environments.

We have used PVC pipe for the base structure of our tree. Sometimes actual dead trees are used. However, PVC pipe is very durable and hopefully, will last for many 'generations' to come. Since it is hollow we will be partially filling ours with sand to help keep it upright. Concrete is another filler that could be used.

Once it is built, the tree will then be covered with virgin cork bark. The cork bark will be attached to the PVC pipe with liquid nails and held onto the pipe with wire. Any holes or cracks will be filled with long fibered sphagnum moss.
