- I was looking through my notes and I wanted to clarify a question I had. Importin shuttles a protein into the nucleus via the nuclear pore complex correct? So, does this mean importin shuttles the protein to the nuclear pore complex which then recognizes it and allows it to pass into the nucleus? Or importin shuttles the protein to the nucleus and the protein just has to go through the nuclear pore complex to get into the nucleus? Let me know if this question is too confusing or doesn't make any sense.(18284 views)

- Just curious about the shuttle proteins (importin and exportin). Since they can get in and out of the nucleus, that means they must have their own NLS and NES, right? Because Exportin seems to get into the nucleus all by itself, thus there must be some reason how it manages to do that. I'm just trying to see whether the "signal rule" applies for all proteins; even the ones that carry other proteins.(18963 views)

- I am having some trouble understanding exactly what makes an importin release the cargo protein once inside the nucleus. I know that the energy from GTP hydrolysis in the cytoplasm is is used for recycling that importin so that it will start another round of importing proteins or other things. But once the importin is inside the nucleus, what makes it let go of the NLS of the protein? Do they just no longer recognize the NLS once inside the nucleus? Or is it just their job to disassemble once inside the nucleus? I'm not sure I understand why the importin just lets go of the cargo protein.(17024 views)
