Questions in Actin and Myosin

- What are microfilaments and protofilaments? What is the difference between them?(24738 views)
- I was just wondering if anyone could clarify something for me. When we were talking about actin binding proteins, did we say that the more G actin they hide, the critical concentration drops and therefore it depolymerizes? But I was thinking that if more G actin were hidden, it would polymerize more... (18596 views)
- I know that if the plus end of F actin has a higher critical concentration than the minus end, then polymerization is favored. Also, if the minus end of F actin has a higher critical concentration than the plus end, then DEpolymerization is favored. However, which situation is favored over the other? Polymerization? (18203 views)
- Which of the following movements is not based on actin-myosin interactions? Correct: Mitosis
Is this a false statement because it only helps with cytokinesis? But than again, cytokinesis is part of mitosis, so you can say mitosis is based on actin-myosin interactions, I think...
I thought the correct answer would be phagocytosis because actin alone is what does phagocytosis, I think...

- In the rigor mortis conformation, there is firm attachment of myosin to the actin filament, and there is no ATP attached to the myosin. Is there ADP on the actin filament, as we discussed on Friday's lecture? (18755 views)
- When the myosin head rebinds to a new position on the actin filament (a weak interaction), does it causes a release of both Pi and ADP?(17965 views)
- In cell crawling, in the myosin-actin complex, is it the myosin or the actin filaments that move? In cytokinesis, in the myosin-actin complex, is it the myosin or the actin filaments that move? i'm guessing it's the myosin that moves. (15719 views)
- Which organelles can move by themselves, and which need to be moved along by actin-myosin interactions?

- If it's true that when the end of the F actin is above critical concentration, then polymerization is favored and when it is below critical concentration, then depolymerization is favored. Then why does it say in the Cooper book that "the critical concentration of actin monomers is higher for addition to the pointed(-) end thanto the barbed (+) end of actin filaments" thus making this homework question true: Correct: The minus end of F actin has a higher critical concentration than the plus end, thus depolymerization is favored. - Are there are two critical concentrations, one for the plus end and one for the minus end, and the Cc for the minus end is higher than the Cc for the plus end?
So if the actual critical concentration for the minus end is above its Cc, then it will be polymerizing, and if it's below its Cc, then it will be depolymerizing, and if it's at its Cc, then there is no net growth. And the same is true for the plus end??
