ATP is not a tremendously high energy molecule, thus less energy is lost as heat when ATP is hydrolyzed. Why is this correct?

If ATP was a very high energy molecule, there would be two problems. One, much more energy would be released than what the coupled endergonic reaction required, meaning most of the energy would be lost as heat. Two, since the synthesis of ATP would require the same magnitude of energy, it would be much harder to synthesize it.
