I am confused about the slide shown in class involving the simultaneous transcription and translation in bacteria. How come the mRNA appears to be almost perpendicular to the DNA strand? Isn't it transcribed along the DNA strand?

Good point, but remember, once the RNA is peeled away from the DNA template as the transcription complex moves down the DNA, it's literally just dangling away from the DNA. So there are no forces keeping it close or parallel to the DNA.
