- The textbook says that a special protein in the centrosome (the protein is denoted by what I think is a Greek letter somewhat resembling the English "y", but I don't know the Greek alphabet) initiates assembly of microtubules and that this protien is associated with other proteins to form a ring complex (Cooper Chapter 12, page 509). Is the ring complex in some way related to the centrioles?

- Movie 3 describes "pause" as a state when microtubules neither grow nor shrink. Does this occur only when something (like taxol) binds to the plus end of the microtubule to block that end from accepting or releasing tubulin dimers, or does "pause" occur through a different process? (3089 views)
- the textbook says that in the centrosome, the gamma-tubulin is associated with other proteins to form a gamma-tubulin ring complex, and gamma-tubulin is also present in the cytosol. Are the centrioles part of the gamma-tubulin ring complex, or can the entire gamma-tubulin ring complex be found in the cytosol? Also, is the entire gamma-tubulin ring complex necessary for microtubule formation, or is the presence of the gamma-tubulin protein sufficient?(4867 views)
- One of the question is From where to microtubules most specifically originate? In the lecture notes, it says that the Pericentriolar Material (PCM) is the collection of proteins from where the microtubules grow out of, but in the next slide it says that the microtubules orginate from the centrosome. So, would the centrosome be a more specific, correct answer?? (4865 views)
- Does tubulin naturally exist as dimers (when it is not part of a microtubule), or do the alpha and beta polypeptides come together when the GTP binds in the beta subunit?

- True or False- Microtubules and tubulin building blocks both have polarity. Do tubulin building blocks refer to the dimers that polymerize to make microtubules? If so, does that make them have polarity if the microtubules themselves have polarity?(5080 views)
