DNA Structure and Replication

ID #1713

Is DNA Polymerase I considered an RNAse?

Well, I suppose it could be called this, but I have to admit I've never heard any of its enzymatic activity described this way. By definition, an RNase would indeed degrade an RNA molecule, but this isn't really a separate RNA molecule we're talking about. We're just talking about a few RNA bases in a strand that at the moment has both RNA and DNA, so we just refer to the removal of RNA bases as its 5'-3' exonuclease activity.
