DNA Structure and Replication

ID #1703

What do we mean by DNA polymerase III being highly "processive"?

DNA polymerase III is a highly processive enzyme, meaning that once it's loaded onto the template, it will continue to synthesize DNA without falling off for a useful amount of time. And since it's fast, that means it can make large amounts of DNA in a relatively short amount of time with few "starts and stops" (except on the lagging strand, of course).
