DNA Structure and Replication

ID #1136

What is the start signal for DNA replication, why does helicase unwind the strand? Is it just because the cell is preparing to begin m-phase?

First of all, replication doesn't happen in M-phase, does it? It happens in S-phase. The start signals are the origins of replication. And it has to be unwound otherwise you wouldn't have single stranded DNA to use as a template.
