DNA Structure and Replication

ID #1119

What does it mean to say chromatin compacts DNA by 1000 fold?

Saying that DNA is compacted by "X"-fold is an indication of how tightly wound it is. If a double helix, when completely extended, has a hypothetical length of 100 millimeters, and it is compacted by a factor of 100, it would now have a length of 1 millimeter. That's what the concept means.
