DNA Structure and Replication

ID #2123

In DNA replication, does helicase start the process of replication by creating the bubble that originates at the ori? Or is there a separate molecule that initiates the creation of the bubble?

There are separate accessory factors (unnamed in this class) which actually recognize the ori sequence and bind to it, and then recruit the massive replication complex. But it is helicase itself that separates the DNA strands and creates the "bubble."
