DNA Structure and Replication

ID #2090

Is there a reason why nucleic acid synthesis only occurs in the 5' to 3' direction, or is that just what has been found to be true?

For an enzyme to be able to do its job, things have to fit into the active site just right. Nucleic acid synthesizing enzymes can only fit the nucleotides and template in their active site in a way that links them in the 5'-3' direction; it's just the only way it works.
