NADH and NAD+ are recycled, but where is NADH or NAD+ initially generated?

Organisms have pathways for making NAD+ from compounds like tryptophan or aspartic acid. Making compounds from simpler building blocks is known as de novo synthesis. The vitamin niacin (or Vitamin B3) can also be broken down into the nicotinamide group that is found in NAD+. There may also be other pathways by which organisms can make or obtain NAD+.
