In lecture, Prof. Mehrtens talked about how the energy level decreases over the course of the electron transport chain. He also talked about how energy is released during the ETC, which is used to shuttle protons from the matrix to the intermembrane space. Is the energy released during the ETC because the energy level of the complexes decreases over the course of the ETC, or does the energy level of the complexes decrease because energy is released when electrons are transferred from complex to complex?


Energy is released (and used to move protons) as the electrons gets passed from one carrier/complex to the next because each subsequent carrier is at a lower energy level. The carriers can only "take" so much energy, and what they can't take is released and used whenever possible.
