Lipids and Biomembranes

ID #1647

If a membrane is asymmetrical does it mean that there are an equal amount of lipids on each side of the leaflet and the are just different types or are there the same number of each lipid type and they are just positioned differently, meaning they are not mirror images of each other?

Asymmetry in a membrane refers to a difference in the percentages of lipids from leaflet to leaflet and also from membrane to membrane. It is therefore the actual number of different lipid molecules that varies.
