I understand that the secondary structure of a protein is indirectly influenced by the side chains, since very long side chains prevent alpha helices from forming. Do long side chains also prevent beta pleated sheets from forming?


Yes, they might not prevent the formation of one "row" of beta sheet if they face the other side, but they would probably prevent the formation of the next row.
