Proteins and Enzymes

ID #2389

Polypeptide chains form in from the N to C terminus. In which direction do they hydrolize?

The specifics of protein degradation (also known as proteolysis) was not covered in any detail in lecture. Peptide bonds can be hydrolyzed, but many different types of enzymes perform the hydrolysis and how they degrade proteins varies. Some proteins cleave proteins at specific amino acid sequences, while others may degrade proteins beginning at one or both ends. Protein degradation is an important mechanism for regulating protein activity.
