In starch, do we just know that the alpha 1, 6 glycosidic linkages are in the branched chains and that the alpha 1,4 glycosidic linkages are in the linear chains? I was just wondering how we know which part is linear and which part is branched?

Yes, if you see an alpha-1,4 linkage in a polymer of glucose, it is part of what I described as a fibril. If you see an alpha-1,6 linkage, it's joining the end of one fibril to a point on another fibril.
