What is the correct way to go about numbering carbons in monosaccharides? And how does this numbering process differ in linear or ring structure form, if at all?

When numbering carbons for monosaccharides in the ring form, you typically start in the upper most right carbon and label that “1”. Then you work clockwise labeling the remaining carbons. (This is if the sugar is drawn in the conventional manner, not when it is flipped). If the sugar is drawn conventionally in its linear form, start at the top and work your way down. There are some good examples of this in your lecture 3 handouts for you to reference.
