If there are 4 monosaccharides linked together, why does this mean there are 3 glycosidic linkages?

Imagine your linking cherry tomatoes together with toothpicks. How many toothpics would you need to link 2 tomatoes? Just one, right? To add a third tomato, you would need a second toothpick, and to add a fourth tomato, you would need a third toothpick. The tomatoes represent the monosaccharides and the toothpicks represent the glycosidic linkages.
