Mobil Genetic Elements -- Viruses and Plasmids

ID #1442

Are linear genomes limited to eukaryotes and circular genomes limited to prokaryotes as far as viral DNA is concerned? Why or why not?

No, there may be a lot of circular genomes in phage and a lot of linear genomes in eukaryotic viruses, but there are plenty of exceptions to this as well. Why? Because evolutionarily speaking, that strategy has worked best for infection of that particular cell type by that particular virus.
