Why is polarity of the Microtubule an advantageous characteristic and how does the polarity contribute or relate to dynamic instability?

The polarity is important because a given motor protein will only move in one direction. Why this is important to dynamic instability is less obvious. In fact, other than knowing that the minus end is usually anchored into the centrosome and not subject to dynamic instability, I don't know that the polarity plays a role.
