says GTP hydrolysis weakens affinity of tubulin for adjacent molecules, favoring depolarization. Would you be able to explain this a little bit more for me?

All it means is that when the GTP is hydrolyzed, the tubulin no longer wants to be part of the microtubule. If there isn't enough free tubulin around to join the end of the filament, the one that "wants" to fall off is able to. Since the ones further into the MT have also hydrolyzed their GTP and have just been waiting until they were at the end of the tubule, they release too, and the MT depolymerizes.
