Why is it called a GTP cap, since it is a segment of GDP that didn't have the time to depolymerize before another segment of tubulin came?


Keep in mind, this is just an arbitrary designation, not a physical structure. But it's called the GTP cap because if there's enough free tubulin around, the outer rim of the MT will have subunits that have not yet hydrolyzed the GTP.
