If there is a low affinity between the GDP's, I understand that the traffic jam example, but even if the dimers are added on to the end, what keeps the GDP microtubule from just breaking apart within the tubule?

There's a certain affinity that each tubulin dimer has for its immediately-adjacent neighbors, and this keeps the entire MT from falling apart.
