Microtubules

ID #2168

Do both ends of a microtubule have the same rate of polymerization and depolymerization in vitro? I have in my lecture notes that the rate of polymerization and depolymerization is twice as fast at the plus end in vitro, but saw elsewhere that it is the same at both ends.

The rate of polymerization  in vitro is twice as fast at the plus end.  However, in vivo the minus end is normally anchored, thus polymerization and depolymerization occur exclusively at the plus end.
