General, Non-Lecture-Specific Questions

ID #1207

I was reading my notes and doing hw, and I realized that I don't know whether the endosymbiotic theory refers to mitochondria specifically as a bacteria, or generally as a prokaryote?

It is widely believed that mitochondria arose from an ancestral member of the Rickettsia genus of bacteria, which (today) are small, intracellular parasites that cause things like Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. We believe this because of the strong similarity in the sequences in the mitochondrial genome compared with modern Rickettsial genomes.
