Actin and Myosin

ID #2142

I understand that certain portions of a sarcomere shrink during movement and some do not. However, how do I determine which parts move and which do not?

If you think about what is actually happening -- myosin motor proteins getting close to the plus end of actin filaments -- then it becomes much more clear that what we're really concerned about with sarcomere contraction is how much overlap there is between actin and myosin. Since the overlap increases as the sarcomere contracts, the areas that "shrink" are the areas that originally had either just actin or just myosin.
