Endoplasmic Reticulum

ID #1990

If proteins are translated on either free or membrane bound ribosomes, do they all follow the secretory pathway? And, if they do, do they all get modified in the RER and the golgi appartus?

If they get translated on free cytosolic ribosomes, then they will never be part of any component of the secretory pathway -- no ER, no Golgi, no secretion, no endosomes, etc. If they are translated on membrane-bound ribosomes, they start in the ER, get modified, and then in all likelihood get sent to the Golgi for further processing and distribution.
