Endoplasmic Reticulum

ID #1854

You perform a pulse chase experiment by labeling with radioactive Methionine, while simultaneously adding a chemical that inhibits signal recognition particle. Determine whether or not radioactive proteins would be detected at each of the following location after 2 hours. If you would predict that radioactive proteins would be detected in a particular location, select True. If you would not predict that radioactive proteins would be detected in that location, select False. It was a true false question and the only option that was true was Mitochondria. I dont understand why. Don't you need a particular signal to enter anything including the mitochondira?

If you knock out SRP, no proteins will get targeted to the ER, which in turn means they can't get anywhere that a protein might go that begins the pathway in the ER. But no other targeting is affected, which means you can still wind up in a mitochondrion, or the nucleus, or a peroxisome, or the cytoplasm.
