Endoplasmic Reticulum

ID #2138

Is the ER-Golgi intermediate compartment part of the golgi (it looks like a cisternae), or is it its own organelle?

The ERGIC is an intermediate compartment located between the ER and the Golgi. It is not connected to the Golgi or the ER, but at the same time it is not really an organelle because nothing happens at the ERGIC. Some vesicles fuse with it when leaving the ER, but not all vesicles stop there. No additional work or processes occur in the ERGIC, so it really is just a temporary stopping point for some vesicles that are destined for the Golgi apparatus.
