Nucleo-Cytoplasmic Exchange

ID #1845

Regarding transferring of mRNA out to the cytoplasm, there has to be a protein within the mRNA that has an NES. But when it gets outside does that factor that carries the mRNA get recycled? And if it does, does it need an NLS to get back in or is it just simply recycled like the other NES's?

Yes, you're right -- that additional carrier protein, the one with the NES that binds to the mRNA, needs a signal of its own to get back to the nucleus to bind to and export the next mRNA. That means that single protein molecule needs both an NES and an NLS!
