How did transposons come to be? What are they function besides making mutations in gene expressions?

Transposons probably arose by infection with one of the viruses I mentioned in my last answer, but the virus lost the ability to get back out of the cell. It is now "trapped" but didn't lose the ability to integrate itself into the genome.
