Mutations

ID #1826

Does the mismatch repair complex only find the GATC sequence, or does it matter what sequence it is? Is there some kind of complimentary base pairing located on the inside, or possibly the outside of the mutation complex that recognizes these sequences?

Yes, it matters what the sequence is, and yes, for E. coli, that sequence is always going to be GATC. Other organisms have different ways of determining where to fix mismatches, but we're only going to focus on E. coli.

This isn't a denaturing thing followed by base pairing -- it's just recognized as double-stranded DNA of that particular sequence. Once that sequence has been recognized, DNA is stripped out on the nonmethylated strand and then replaced.
